An orthopedic surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in the musculoskeletal system and can perform surgery. A sports medicine doctor is also a medical doctor who specializes in sports-related injuries and conditions, but they may or may not be an orthopedic surgeon. Many orthopedic surgeons have an additional subspecialty in sports medicine.
