UroLift
UroLift is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) that uses tiny implants to hold enlarged prostate tissue away from the urethra — no cutting, heating, or removal of tissue.
Men with BPH symptoms (weak stream, urgency, frequency, nighttime urination) who want to avoid medication side effects or the sexual side effects associated with TURP.
Performed in 30–60 minutes under light sedation or local anesthesia. A urologist places 2–6 permanent implants through the urethra. Most patients go home the same day, often without a catheter.
Return to normal activity within days. Mild burning with urination or blood-tinged urine for a few days is typical. Symptom relief usually begins within 2 weeks.
Typically $3,000–$8,000 out of pocket if uninsured. Covered by Medicare and most commercial plans when medically necessary.
Questions to ask your doctor
- How many UroLift procedures have you performed?
- Am I a candidate given my prostate size and anatomy?
- What are the alternatives (Rezūm, TURP, medication) for my case?
- What is your rate of retreatment after 5 years?
- Will I need a catheter afterward?
Frequently asked
The implants are permanent, but a small percentage of patients need retreatment over 5 years. Long-term studies show durable symptom relief for most men.
UroLift is the only BPH procedure with no reported new-onset ejaculatory or erectile dysfunction in FDA studies.
Rezūm uses water vapor to shrink prostate tissue; UroLift mechanically holds tissue open with implants. Recovery and eligibility differ — a urologist can advise.
