Which specialists to see
Neurologists
Find oneBoard-certified diagnosis and management for migraine, cluster, and post-concussive headaches.

Ear, Nose & Throat
Find oneWhen sinus disease is genuinely the cause — most 'sinus headaches' are actually migraines.
Family Physicians
Find oneGreat first step for infrequent headaches; can start abortive and preventive therapy.
Red flags that need same-day care
A sudden thunderclap headache, headache with fever and stiff neck, headache after a head injury, or new neurologic symptoms (weakness, vision loss, confusion) belong in the ER — not a neurology waitlist.
When primary care isn't enough
If you've tried two preventive medications without meaningful improvement, or your headache is disabling more than 4 days a month, a neurologist (ideally a UCNS-certified headache specialist) can offer CGRP inhibitors, Botox for chronic migraine, and neuromodulation devices.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a neurologist and a headache specialist?
All headache specialists are neurologists, but only some neurologists are UCNS-certified in headache medicine. For treatment-resistant migraine, ask specifically for a headache-medicine fellow.
Are CGRP inhibitors covered by insurance?
Most plans cover them after trial of two older preventives. A neurologist's office typically handles the prior authorization.
